The Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY) is an active creator of connections and opportunities within the fields of arts, architecture, and design. Enabling dialogue between Finland and the U.S., the Institute strengthens cross-cultural collaborations and partnerships. At the end of the term of our current Director, we are looking for a new Executive Director for the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.

As Executive Director, you are responsible for the Institute’s operations, financing, development, and staff. You report to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.

To succeed in the position we expect you to have:

  • Strong multidisciplinary expertise in the core disciplines of the Institute’s programming: architecture, design, and contemporary art

  • Professional insight on the Institute’s operating environment from the perspective of organizational development

  • Ability to set clear goals and the means to achieve them

  • Strong administrative skills and an understanding of the funding structures of arts and cultural organizations in both Finland and the U.S.

  • Good leadership skills and the ability to be an inspiring leader in a small work community

  • Good cooperation, negotiation, and presentation skills

  • A suitable university degree

  • Knowledge of the visual arts field and its structures in the U.S. and Finland

The working language at the Institute is English; Finnish is not required, but is a strong asset in the role. The assignment is for a fixed-term (3 years) and may be extended by a separate agreement depending on the work visa policies. The work will start in October 2021 or as agreed. If the selected candidate does not hold a citizenship or resident status in the U.S., the institute will apply for a suitable visa.
